Essential learning tool?

Sure, it's a neat device, but I don't think it's as vital as they think it is. While it might hold the students attention for a little while, sooner or later they're going to get bored of them just like anything else. In that case, their old books will serve them just as well.

Yeah i understand how it could hold the child's attention, but how long before they spill juice on it all they break? how could the school keep affording to buy new ones?

Does anyone think that an iPad is essential for a kindergartener's education?

I wouldn't call them essential, but I think they could be quite useful. Maybe I didn't hear it right, but it sounded like the students get to keep the iPads. It seems like it would be a better investment to just keep classroom sets. I'm pretty sure middle schoolers don't need iPads.

iPads aren't essential for learning at all. It's not what they're meant for and people have been learning for hundreds of years just fine without them.

i think its such a great idea because its some thing that the little kids would actually enjoy using and they would pay attention and learn because of the fact they get to use iPads! although two years from now those will be so outdated probably the school will think it was a pretty stupid investment. and how do they have the money to do that???

The Ipad is definitely something that they can work with to enhance the learning skills of these kids. It has endless possibilities of what you could really use to teach different things. I think that they're very fortunate to have these and will benefit them dramatically. It is better to learn more early as a child so you build up on these things which the Ipad is definitely capable of doing.

I think it's great if you have the money but for the most part, kindergartener's learn their alphabet and numbers fine. It's simple learning; I don't understand why they need expensive technology in order to accomplish something people have been doing for hundreds of years now.

This is ridiculous, I didn't need an iPad to learn the days of the week and the alphabet in kindergarten. I could see some use for iPads for older kids maybe. Then we have schools across the nation suffering budget cuts and having to let go teachers, better buy every kid a $500 iPad!

i think spending all this money for kids to have an ipad is kind of ridiculous, chances are kids would lose or break the ipads, and plus with all the apps you can get, and getting on the internet, i think it would be a distraction to a lot kids.

iPads are not essential for anyone's learning. These kids are going to grow up and have problems interacting with each other and with teachers because they have been glued to their computers since kindergarten! The school is making a mistake in providing all these kids with a tool that will be obsolete by the time they are even in middle school.

Its a neat idea, I'm glad that the seemingly meaningless technology that is being mass produced these days are of some use. As for it being "essential for kindergarten education", I'd have to disagree. Children have been learning just fine in kindergarten classes well before the iPad was even thought up... but the times are changing so I guess its acceptable that teaching techniques change too.

They said it's good for learning because it's a neat thing and keeps their attention, but in 5 years it will be normal and they will find it just as boring as we find textbooks, except they will have more opportunities to get distracted. Bad idea.

Fahrenheit 451 here we come? This is pretty ridiculous in my opinion. What happened to books? And how in the world do they pay for this? I don't think that kindergarten age kids should be using these, especially when they're in school. Talk about the attention span disappearing.

If they gave me one of those in kindergarten I would have broken it in the first month. Plus they would probably distract me more.

I agree with Megan Davis on this. Ipads are cool and everything, but not for a five year old. They need to be taught by a teacher who can be interactive with them. I disagree.

What the heck? why do kinder gardeners need Ipads? And i thought schools had no money, are they firing teachers to try to make up the deficit to buy these Ipads? why not just hire a really good teacher to teach the kids how to read and write. I think if they are going to buy ipads for any students it should be high school students since schools could actually save money since they could now download the books and carry less weight with them to school everyday since they know their books are all in an Ipad.

I think this is a great idea, however I believe that kindergarteners are way to young to be using electronic like I-pads. Maybe if they used them occasionally and not all the time because as we are everyone is addicted to electronics. I believe for Middle schoolers and High schoolers this is a great idea to get the weight of backpacks down, however kindergarten is too young.

your kidding me...you know what kids do in kindergarten?

they eat, sleep, count to 10 and go on a field trip every other day. It's not essential to a kindergarteners education because you honestly learn nothing in kindergarten.

iPad's are not vital for ANYONE's education especially a 6-year old. I'm utterly baffled that this would even be a flicker of a thought for a school to have. Inconceivable!
