READ--THINK--PARTICIPATE

How would you feel if TTSD paid an outside tech company to monitor its students online activity? Guess what, it's happening in other school districts now

I think it would be a bad idea for TTSD to hire a tech company to watch students' online activity. Especially since companies such as Geo Listening won't even say how they look at student's social media accounts. I would understand if there were a couple of students with suspicious activity but I don't think it's necessary to be watching the entire school. It could also lead students to believe that they're being watched all the time and become paranoid, which isn't supposed to happen at school.

I feel that hiring a tech company to watch the students being a good or bad idea depends on how you look at it. I think if they're looking for certain words and it's all for the safety of the students and workers, then that's fine. On the other hand, if they get students in trouble for expressing their opinions of teachers, then that makes it a bad idea. For me, it all comes down to the intentions of it.

Are they monitoring personal online activity, like at home? Or are the monitoring the activity going on through the school's wifi and or computers? If they are monitoring people personally, then I think that it should not be permitted. The district has no right to know what the students are doing outside of school. However, if the activity is occurring using school computers, then the district has every right to know exactly what it is that their devices are being used for.

It definitely wouldn't be right to monitor students' online activity unless it's in school. I guess you could say we're "full time students", but that doesn't mean our privacy should be taken away. Students in a learning environment deserve as much privacy as an adult in the working environment. Monitoring activity on SCHOOL devices is perfectly fine because they deserve to know how their resources are being used. That being said, it wouldn't be right to monitor personal devices.

Anything using school wi-fi, computers, or other electronic devices can/should be monitored for everything. Other than that, I don't think that schools should monitor everything, instead I think they should set up an XKEYSCORE-esque sorting algorithm and monitor student communications for threats and bullying.

I think it is okay, stuff people put online is never private. Even if you delete it after 5 minutes someone somewhere has a screencap and then uploads the screencap. Then others download the screencap and it is there forever. I see so many people on twitter posting pictures of them smoking weed or drinking alcohol it is just sad.

I don't think that the school has a right to monitor student activity outside of school in any way. If it's off the school's wifi, computers, and property, it's the real authority's business, not the school's. That being said, I do think it completely just for a school to monitor the activity of anyone on or using any school property, as it is the student's choice to be there, and in their knowledge that there are security cameras and overrides working in their defense.

It really depends on how they do it. If the school starts to monitor us students for word choice or to see if we're hurting others online then sure, I agree that they should do it. But if they won't allow honest student opinions than it seems like a freedom of speech violation. For example: If I couldn't say I hate math online without getting get in trouble with the school, that wouldn't be fair.

I think it's fine to do stuff like this. They have a good reason, but I think that they should only monitor social media sources. They post on these sites knowing that anyone can see it; anything else would be an invasion of privacy.

Social media sources should be the target and not an entire school. Maybe a few students here and there should be watched but only if accused of a crime like selling drugs at school or breaking school rules such as bullying. If the entire school were to monitor every thing that you did, how would you feel? Personally, I would feel paranoid and all in all very uncomfortable at school.

I do not think monitoring students online activity is necessary unless they are on school computers or school wifi. However, I also think that it is right for TTSD to want to protect its students, but only to a certain extent. If they do start to monitor students, they should only do so respectively.

I don't think that it is right for the students to be monitored online if they are outside of the school. If they are in the school, I think that they have every right to make sure that the students aren't doing something bad online. I know that by monitoring the students inside and outside of school, they are just trying to keep everyone in a safe environment, however I feel like students should have privacy when they are online outside of school.

I honestly think this should not be a thing. IF TTSD was watching all the student's social media post, what is next, the school will be more and more integrated to the students life. Sooner or later in maybe 20 years or so they could have justification on reading direct messages from student to student. This is insane!! Why, School is a public place where people can act what they want to. However it does not give the school the right to snoop through my private life. If you were a parent would YOU want your student to be snooped through. Especially when the principal did not get any consent what so ever!!!!!!!! This is unconstitutional and this should never happen at TTSD! We have a right to our own privacy and the right to do whatever we chose to do publicly or privately without the "man" snooping through our things.
