Here's some great information about Andersonville. I will be discussing it this week. Check out this photo of a POW from Andersonville. ***WARNING, THIS PICTURE IS GRAPHIC IN NATURE***
Wow. that really reminds me of some of the pictures at the holocost museum that i went to in 8th grade on the D.C. trip. That is really sad. I don't understand how someone could just put people in a pit with that many other people and in such terrible conditions and not even care. Making another human suffer to that degree is just wrong. It would be interesting to compare andersonville to the POW camp that was in the north and other POW camps in the US in other wars. But what i really wonder is if the camp in the north was just as bad, did Lincoln know about it? did he know how bad other humans were being treated? and if he did, how does that make sense when he was trying to free the slaves that were being treated like dogs in bondage, but treating a POW even worse? hmmm...
Is there no boundary? are they no limits to the deprecation and degradation of every aspect of the human being? Not in times of great conflict.
Things like this stain the fabric of society. And like a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, a society is only as great as its worst feats...
And although it is not particularly surprising to see such sinister and foul deeds, I can't help but cringe when I add this one to the list. Oh and don't worry, things like this have yet to cease, and people all over the world suffer similarly every day. How wonderful.
Oh, and about the morality of war, the winning side is always good, and their acts commended rather than condemned. Blah blah, etc etc.
Um... Min... I don't know whether or not to take that comment seriously. The Holocaust had many many more people involved. They were burned alive. Gassed. It was genocide. Sources estimate the deaths around 9 to 11 million people. I fail to see how imprisoning and starving 33,000 people is worse than that.
What I found most interesting was that the original estimate was 10,000 people in a 16.5 acre area, but then the number of people ended up more than tripling that of the original estimate, whereas the area only went up by 1.5 times... And they made the Union prisoners build it bigger, so it was like making them dig their own graves (which I don't doubt at all actually happened).
I'm a native South Carolinian and I attained my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. I taught fourth grade for two years in the Mississippi Delta and two years at an alternative high school in Western North Carolina. I have been at Tigard High School since the fall of 2003, where I teach U.S. History and Psychology.

I saw some History Channel show called Horrors of Andersonville or something like that, it's pretty messed up.

The comment above and this one is from Charles Specht, I just don't get this whole name thing.

Oh my gosh, that is scary! I can't believe he even survived for very long looking like that.

It doesn't even look like he's alive.
5:30 PM
How is he alive! I don't understand. If they were just gonna treat the prisoners like that then why did they keep them alive?

Andrea,
Some how that POW hung on. The human spirit can be quite strong at times.

Oh the treasures that war bestows upon the world!
