These people scare me. I can't believe how people can believe this when there is so much evidence to show the that earth was made 4.5 billion years ago and not in 6000 years ago as some people would like to believe. Its common knowledge that the dinosaurs were killed off millions of years before humans came around. Its incredible to me how some christians will believe anything that the bible tells them.
i believe that we cant state whether there is or is not a God and whether he created the human species or evolution was the factor.....to me i believe that humans were created by both evolution and God...but hey thats me, i dont mind what people think but i am bothered by those who are not opened minded and try to shove their beliefs in peoples throat (william jennings bryan)
i wish the world had something like jurasic park....
But the artistic part of the exhibits sounds pretty cool. Although I disagree with what they preach, I think it would still be cool to view the exhibits as works of art.
I think we should still have a debate tomorrow on what people think about the scope monkey trial and if it was legit! I think that forever people have had religion and thats why they gets so offended basically when scientist start saying it's bogus. you cant tell people what to believe but towards that exhibit i think it's cool that people constructed all that basically on belief. even if evolution can be backed up by science.
I guess I'm crazy because I believe in creation. What "scares" me is that people cannot respect others' beliefs and have to mock them. I do not really understand what this debate is about. No I do not believe everything about evolution, but that does not mean I think it shouldn't be taught. I have no problem learning about it as it is an essential part of science. And no, of course creation should not be taught in science class because it is not science, it's faith. It has nothing to do with science.
Faith and science cannot be debated against each other because science is about reason and rationality and faith is about trusting when you do not have all the exact answers. For me, there is nothing to debate here. Science is science and faith is faith.
The debate, discussion, whatever you want to call it, is about religion in public schools. The Scopes Monkey Trial was meant to be a spring board for discussion about religion in the public sphere (i.e., school).
Personal attacks will not be allowed. No one will be choosing sides tomorrow, the class will not be divided into two halves of the room. Tomorrow's discussion is simply that, a discussion. Intelligent design, creation science, and evolution in science classes are incredibly relevant issues in public education right now.
There's a huge element of people in the United States who believe that intelligent design and creationism should be taught in American schools. If you want to sit in class and simply listen tomorrow that is your choice.
Carlisle, There is no need for the debate tomorrow, that is unless you can find someone who will argue on the side of teaching religious views (ANY religion's)in public schools. Unless someone has changed their opinion on this topic overnight, I think we should have an alternate class discussion that will prevent the direct attack of any religion (yeah, if you include Christianity I think that other religious views should be discussed as well).
uh hi... im on the "side" as sam says that thinks religion should be taught in schools more. all religions tho, not just certain ones. the reason i didnt raise my hand in class was becuase i think evolution should be taught in school, people do need to have an open mind, to all types of beliefs. but i think we should have a discussion about religion in schools! as for the museum that looked cool!
oh and am i allowed to bring a bible to school and like have it in class? cuz i read about being able to pray, just not while class is in session, but what about reading... what if i wanted to read the bible for ssr?
Haley, Umm. I'm open to other people's opinions on religion but I don't think that it should be in a mandatory course such as history. There is a seperation of church and state and it should be respected. Though,I would be totally open to a theology course as an elective because I think it might broaden other people's minds (mine included).
oh oops, i didnt mean to make it seem like a mandatory class, just an elective, maybe not even for credit, i dont think the mormon seminary students get ths credit. i agree about a theology course, i think its good for people to know about other religions/beliefs than their own.
i know this is late but before i went to DC i was actually at the Creation museum.
its interesting and they raised a couple of good points about why evolution is wrong but i can't remember what they were, they were scientific and kinda confusing
i do not believe in evolution and Max - no personal attacks against Creationists and people who believe in God, everyone has a right to believe in what they want(becides in my mind you are oh so very wrong) and please CAPITALIZE Christian and Bible- it is correct no matter what you believe - don't be rude
this is just my OPINION and what i think is true - you don't have to believe it
and i think that either BOTH Creation and Evolution should be taught or niether not just one
I'm bummed too, Michelle.... I completely agree with what Olivia was talking about with the faith and science comparison- You can't compare those things in a debate... I can't beleive, contrary to what Max says, there are so many people who beleive in evolution. I find it hard to understand how some people think that the world and everything on it came to be without any influence from a divine power. All parts of nature work together to help each other part exist. Cells are complex- So what is the probability of a cell coming together to make every single part of this world come to be? I personally beleive that something as complex and detailed as this world cannot be analyzed like many people are trying to do. I think faith is the only way to see reason for why this earth exists and is the way it is. As for how these things are taught in schools, I think that everyone should have to the choice to learn whatever it is they personally beleive about the matter. I would never want to be enforced to learn about evolution, so I don't think it would be fair to enforce creation thoeries either.
I'm a native South Carolinian and I attained my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. I taught fourth grade for two years in the Mississippi Delta and two years at an alternative high school in Western North Carolina. I have been at Tigard High School since the fall of 2003, where I teach U.S. History and Psychology.

Carlisle, you don't need to cancel the debate, just alter it.
Instead of it being "should Evolution be taught in schools?" it should be "should Creationism be taught in schools?"
I don't want to carry that heavy book around :(
