I think that expulsion may have been a little harsh, suspension would have been more fair. But at the same time, I understand why the school is trying to expel him though, they want to send a very firm message to anyone who may be thinking about doing that.
what a stupid kid. what did he think would happen? and where is it possible to get KKK shirts? i think expulsion is a little extreme considering all he did was wear the shirt. as long as he wasn't threatening anyone i think suspension would suffice.
I don't think he deserves expulsion but definitely suspension. He probably doesn't realize the full extent of the message. I know when I was in 8th grade I didn't know as much about the KKK as I did now. He probably thought it was funny.
People are stupid. I agree with Charlotte. I think he thought was funny. Depending on the other details and if there was no threat behind it, then I think suspension may have even been a little harsh. Then again, suspension is a possible punishment for breaking our dress code.
Hey Mr. C... Soo apparently my mom made me a dentist appointment tomorrow morning and told me today So is there any way I can reschedule to take my test after school instead...? Sorry for the inconvenience!!! Just let me knoww
I think suspension would have been better and also somehow have him learn how bad racism is personally so he doesnt do it again. Although racism is bad, I think schools sometimes go over the top in punishment.
so i guess my coach decided to be lame and not send out pre-arranged absent forms on thursday or friday but tomorrow I have to leave during 2nd period for golf. I was just wondering if there are any handouts I need to get tomorrow morning?
No handouts, however, you are responsible for getting the reading assignment from the blog tomorrow. If you saved anything that is of major importance for your group, please make sure someone has it as they finish the research tomorrow.
Well I have first lunch everyday and can't miss part of math..so unless you want me to take it right after my class I can start it and finish after school... I'm not sure, however you want to make it work is okay with me. I'll just talk to you in 2nd about it
I think that the 8th grader was just looking for trouble. I think that every middle schooler that took History has learned in their lives that the KKK was bad and that they did bad things to black people (to put it in simple words). I think that he knew it wasn't acceptable and he just wanted to start something up, and not necessarily be racist. So yes he is stupid and yes suspension is a fair punishment. I think that expulsion may be a little over the top but if they decide to expel him, I wouldn't go against it.
I think that punishment was extreme. I know the KKK is a hate group, and in no way do I support them, but I think expulsion and maybe even suspension was too much. I think wearing that shirt is protected under the 1st ammendment. However, since it is a school and the constitution doesn't really fly in schools, I think that he should have to do community service at the school and if he wears the shirt again he gets suspended or expelled.
Even though the first amendment gives you certain rights, I think racism shouldn't be considered because it's harmful to others maybe not physically, but emotionally. The school obviously wanted to make a point that they would not tolerate any form of racism at their school. I think it was fair.
At that age that kid should've known not to wear that shirt. And now all the kids that that shirt threatened will probably be scared and his life at school will probably suck. So being expelled is probably a good idea for him.
that is too harsh. he could have been talked about the extremity of what he did, and i think expulsion was a bit extreme. Expulsion seems too much for just ONE day of wearing that shirt. if someone talked to him about what he did, i'm pretty sure he would have stopped and understood.
hmm interesting.... If it was just for a joke(although not funny) the kid should've got suspended..however..it seems as if he was serious about the shirt..so i would say expulsion wasn't harsh.
I think that it was definately wrong for the student to wear that kind of a shirt there because it promoted racism and violence. Honestly, I'm thinking that expulsion might not teach them anything, but then again.. it's expulsion..
I think that if the kid does not have the sense to not wear that shirt than he deserves his punishment. That group is linked to too many bad memories of America.
I'm a native South Carolinian and I attained my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. I taught fourth grade for two years in the Mississippi Delta and two years at an alternative high school in Western North Carolina. I have been at Tigard High School since the fall of 2003, where I teach U.S. History and Psychology.

anyone who makes reference to the kkk in a good way can go down deep in my opinion.......racist people have no life

he deserved that
the KKK isn't something to support and racism is no longer tolerated anywhere - not that it was ever OK

Suspension, sure. Expulsion, nah.
