I think that the new movie "The New World" looks like it will be a pretty accurate movie on what it was really like when this acutually hapenned. The actors are not exactly the best, but it could turn out pretty good.

I did not know the real story of Pocahontas. So she married John Rolfe and became known as Rebecca Rolfe, that was interesting. But why would they lie to her about John Smith being dead?

i think the reason not many people know the real story of Pocahontis is because they are satisfied with the disney movie. I certainly never really wondered if the disney version was not a real account of the true story.

im sad. my little girl dreams of pocahontas have been crushed. I cant believe how hollywood can change a 'real' story so much.

Katie,

Why do you think people are satisfied with the myth of Pocahantas?

I learned most of this from previous years in history, what i didn't know was the way that pocahontas allegedly saved john smith, or that she married rolfe. I also didn't know there was a pocahontas 2, don't worry though, it's in the netflix queue. (david robertson, per.1)

I think that "The New World" shows more of what really happened but I think that it also might still incorporate a little bit of falsehood.

OK so the rated R version of Disney's? Sweet! I hope it has the facts straight so I get a real idea of what actually went down.

I really like the preview for "the new world". It looks like it would be pretty realistic. And the colors of the wind was funny now that we know how the story really went down.

I think this is pretty close to realistic for Disney. It's modified because these films are intended for children. 99% of parents wouldn't want to have their children watching animated movies where the tribe of the heroin is slowly killed off.
The New World is created for adults. Obviously, it contains more realistic material because the intended audience is more mentally capable of handling such truths.
And I don't like Colin Farrell.

The love angle with Smith makes for more entertaining- and attractive-accounts. It is interesting that his journal makes no mention of this historic event, while his book does. Possibly, it was nothing serious or important at the time, and details were emphasized to sell the Colony and his book. People like the Disney version because they prefer the sugar coated story which plays on the optimistic qualities of humanity. While this can be useful in literature/film, I believe that being able to cope with harsh realities is essential for character and progression.

She didn't actually end up with John Smith?! That's mildly upsetting. I feel like I've been living a lie. Oh well...at least she ended up with one of those Johns.

And she did save John Smith's life? The reading from today made it sound like she didnt...then again I could be completely wrong.

I saw the movie when it first came out at blockbuster and i found myself thinking that it was boring more than once. The trailer made it look far more fascinating. My dreams were also crushed when I found out she didn't really marry John Smith.

Isn't this movie still trying to portray the fictional idea of pocahontas and john smith falling in love with each other? Although the movie looks like its pretty accurate.

People like the nice stories with no ends, we tend not to think on it afterward because the movies do not leave our questions un answered or leave us with new questions.

I don't think a Disney movie can go too horribly wrong. And historically, although it's toned down, I find that in general, the main ideas surrounding an event/history are portrayed well enough.

haha in the disney version, my favorite part is when she jumps off the cliff, and dives in the water while she is still singing. she must be pretty skilled to sing under water.

I think that the "New World" movie seems pretty accurate about what really happened. I learned that that the Disney movie was completely false, but that does not even bother me since I have maybe seen that movie once in my lifetime.
