Howard Zinn on the Ludlow Massacre

It is very interesting to see how big of an impact this massacre had on the Americans and on all of the unions. I believe it demonstrated a sense of injustice toward the people, because it showed that with money one may get its way out of anything. The loss of this strike may have not impacted so many people, but it was the way that it was lost that caused such commotion and more conflict between the unions and the employers.

It's unfortunate that Zinn said he heard the song about the Ludlow Massacre but had never heard about it before in history class- like the event was just shrugged off. I think that it needs to be owned up to and addressed more widely- a massacre that took place not that long ago, by our own National Guard shouldn't be something that gets to slide, no biggie.

i find it shocking that Zinn had never heard of the Ludlow massacre. pretty powerfull event. I find it interesting and I enjoyed learning about it today in class including the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory.

btw i liked the little song playing in the background. haha

Mary brings up a good point, that the Ludlow Massacre should be addressed, but on the other hand this kind of event would most likely NOT occur in present-day America, so is there really a need to pursue the subject except as a part of our history?

I think its interesting that events with lower death totals such as the Boston Massacre are fawned over in history classes and books, while the Ludlow Massacre is pushed away, out of sight. Is history written by the victors? And if so, does this mean the strikers did not really win?

i think that many of the past events that have occured in american history are not pressed on much. this massacre for example truly shows how money can corrupt people so much that they will do anything to get it. it doesn't even matter if thousands of innocent lives are sacrificed for the money's sake. i find it amazing how things like this can be viewed as nothing big and yet it has impacted out society now so much more than the society back then. the song playing in the background was also very meaningful too.

Its supprising that there was no mention of the massacre in his text book or history class. Its unbelievable that our own national guard killed those people.

He never heard of it in his history classes huh? That makes me wonder how much more we're missing from history that isn't told in books and stories.

Rob, another thing to be considered is how much more we are learning in our history classes now, considering we are learning about the Ludlow Massacre...

I have never heard about this before, and it was very interesting to learn about. I am just wondering why after however many history classes that I have taken that I have never learned about this. But I am glad that I am learning about it now. Another piece of very interesting history!

I think it's extremely ridiculous that the national guard did this. It wasn't just some people with guns. It was people who work for the government. I don't get how back then that was okay.
