I think the College Board was just trying to save face there at the end of the report because if you write more, I think the scorers of the SAT will automatically give you either A. The benefit of the doubt in your arguments even if they aren't that good or B. A higher score because it shows that the student has the capacity to write more than others. However if the content is less than desirable, I could see the test score being lower as opposed to the shorter, more concise essay.

Do you think the SAT actually measures one's intellectual ability or merely test taking skills?

I think the SAT aims to measure one's intellectual ability, but there are faults in the test which causes it to be more of a measure of test taking skill:

The fact that the test is timed makes students have to pace themselves and skip over answers they are unsure of...

If the SAT was more about measuring intellectual ability, the essay score wouldn't be based to much on length. If you have a long essay with poor arguments and average writing skills it definitely should not score higher or even the same as a shorter essay that gets to the point and is well written..

i can see where brett is going with this being a measure of test taking skill rather than intelligence because the way i was taught to write an SAT essay is completely based on time, and getting through the essay rather than the content.

its already super hard to write a full 5 paragraph essay in 25 minutes so i guess as long as you finish the 5 paragraphs your score would be somewhat higher.

regardless, i really hope this isnt true because i just took the SAT on saturday...and my essay wasnt that long.

i think that for people who can test well it's a fine measure of intellect (as long as the questions are relevant to what they've been learning in school), but for a lot of people they get anxious or something and the estimation of their intellect becomes lower than the reality. I think that overall it an be n ok tool to use when your trying to figure out someones intelligence, but don't depend on it. (I hope that even made sense....)

I agree with Ivan all the way. i think they want to save face because they were just told by a 14 yr old. How embarrassing.

The fact that the SAT is timed proves that it is a measure of test taking skills rather than intellects. UNFAIR!
