What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you think it will make a difference. On a related note, Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution premieres tonight at 8:00 on KATU. His focus this season is the L.A. School District, which banned him from their schools.

I don't think they should force children to eat, just school lunches. In most instances children who eat unhealthy food at lunch, are eating unhealthy foods at home, where whoever packs their lunch is feeding them. The school should focus on educating students, and even the parents, on the effects on unhealthy eating starting at young ages, and what they should be eating. Just banning lunch from home, isn't teaching the kids what to eat, it just says eat this, but no explanation to why.

I definitely disagree with forcing kids to eat the school lunch. However, I do think action needs to be taken. Education programs at schools might help a bit but they wouldn't be enough to solve the problem. They could fail like DARE. What the government needs to do is use propaganda to convince people to eat only granola and celery.

I agree with Hayley, if they're bringing crap from home to eat at school, chances are they're eating the same junk at home. At least they are eating... I think a policy that limits kids to only eating school food is probably going to lead to hunger strikes...

I feel that it's a good idea in theory, but, as the others have said, forcing the children to eat "school-provided healthy food" is not an efficient way to promote healthy eating. Having healthier options to choose from at school is acceptable, but who is to say what is healthiest? I know that most of my friends who bring lunch to school usually have healthier lunches than that of which the school has. As far as elementary school goes, it is the families' duties to give the children healthy food if they are bringing their lunches. From my experience, schools discuss nutrition in every health class from elementary school through high school.

This is ridiculous. Especially considering the low quality of the food provided by the school... Greasy pizza, hard bagels, and fake chicken sandwiches aren't exactly the most nutritious food in the world.

Also, at this age, many of the parents pack the lunches for the kids. The parents should be the ones to blame. Maybe hold a conference educating parents. I don't know. But banning homemade lunches is ridiculous

I think it is good Jaime Oliver is promoting better school lunches be provided. However as said above I disagree with the whole thing about forcing kids to eat school lunches. I think that school lunches as they are right now are very sad. The only item on the menu at school that I might be able to eat is the fruit salad, and even the fruit is loaded up with pesticides. I think america should do better!

I think what school kids eat is more of parents' responsibility than a school's. It is true that children should start eating healthier food but forcing them to eat the food that they don't like will leave them either hungry or resistant to healthy food. I also agree that school should educate the children to encourage them to make healthier choices.
