It seems like judging the education levels of congress members by the lengths of their sentences is something a freshman would do. This study seems irrelevant.

Sentence length and the number of syllables doesn't seem like a very good way to judge intellect level. It shouldn't really matter how long the sentence is, but the meaning of it and if there is true substance. I think the politician's should realize who their audience is, and it's better to be concise and easily understandable than to lose the listeners halfway through the speech.

How about the most important aspect of congressional debate- what you actually say and making it clear?

I'm skeptical about how they are measuring this. What algorithm did they use, and is it even valid. The article implies that sentence length plays a part in determining the grade-level a congressman speaks at, and any reasonably literate person will know that the number of words you speak does not determine the quality of your speaking.
