It's odd that they focus on one part of the bible. It would be interesting to see how the children will act when they are adults, and how the major influence of such a constricted/conservative point of view of the world will affect them.
It's interesting how they hold so tightly to the First Amendment, but are okay with violating other people's rights. It's also weird how they don't try to disguise or hide what they're doing at all, but are proud of it instead.
Very interesting beliefs. I think that it shows how people can interpret certain things very differently. I don't understand how if homosexuals "sinned" against God but asked for forgiveness they still wouldn't be accepted by him, but they lady who he a child out of wedlock is accepted by God again so easily. It was against her beliefs and she seemed to take it very lightly. Also, I think it's interesting how they only focus on homosexuality. What if they protested against the one woman who had her child out of wedlock?
I agree with Zack, I also find it very harsh that they just kick there son or daughter out of their life. When they don't have the same opinion as them.
This is the BIGGEST proof that i can think of that shows that not everyone that goes to church is a good person. I am having a hard time even fathoming this whole thing. I just don't really see the purpose of spending an excessive amount of time trying to "convert" or tell homosexuals and other bystanders that being gay is a bad thing/ its a sin/ blah blah blah all of that other BS (sorry). Honestly this whole thing really upsets me. People can be and do whatever they want (being homosexual/protest homosexuality) and be who they want and SAY what they want but is anyone really going to listen? No homosexual person is going to have an AH-HA moment where they "magically aren't gay anymore!!!!! WBS makes me want to pluck my eyelashes out with frustration. I hope that eventually the law will be passed that allows all 50 states to have gay marriage.... I would love to see the WBS explode with anger. :-)
Another thing just popped into me head... If ANYONE should be "punished" by God for America being okay with homosexuality then it should be the members of the Wesboro Baptist Church and NOT soldiers fighting for our freedom.
I take no issue with them. These are their rights and they are free to express them. One thing about freedom with the US, as oppose to other first world countries, is that we are tolerant of intolerance. Also, what kind of message does it send if we have to force these people to stop their pickets as oppose to fighting them on the plain of logic, and argumentative discussion. However this IS a secular nation, and decisions should not be made on the basis of ones own theological beliefs,(if any) but on the basis of what is the best for the people they are supposed to be serving. I think we also have to take into consideration of the location that may/may not impact our beliefs/opinions. I think that living in the West, we are more open to newer and contemporary beliefs...such as gay marriage. Personally, I don't have a problem with homosexuality. But I don't look down on people who do have a problem with it. If people can protest for Gay Rights, why can't people protest against it? I'm not saying what I think the people of the Westboro Baptist Church are doing is right, but I think people who protest against Gay Rights get more ridicule than people who protest for it. I think it is okay for other people to support homosexuality, and I think it is okay for other people to not support it.
In the Bible it reads many contradictions, one of which including homosexuality and it's sinning aspect. Where do you draw the line if we look at how Jesus died for our sins? If I were to be gay, I should still be clean, right? Because of a paraphrased book developing over time, we frown upon gay marriage. "Free country?" Need I say no more. We balance the happiness of gays in a free country based on Faith. How does that make sense? That's either stupid, or stupid. God Bless America.
Having an opinion and being able to speak freely is a right that everyone has, including the people of the Westboro Baptist Church; however, an opinion is a belief, which you, yourself believe in. Other people have the same right to have their own beliefs, which may or may not be the same as yours. I, personally believe that everyone deserves to be happy with whomever they please, whether it be two men together, two women together or a man and a women together. The people of the Westboro Baptist Church are free to speak their minds, but forcing their children to make the decision between leaving their hometown or following their parents beliefs is absurd. For people who advocate so much for "God," their presentation of their beliefs is hellish in nature. Their signs are disturbing and unsettling, their children are brainwashed and speak words of hate and overall their main target, to convert all homosexuals to heterosexuality is neither peaceful nor pleasant; rather, disrespectful and invasive. Freedom is limited in this world, at least give the people the freedom to love and feel loved by whomever they desire.
They have the right to freely protest along with the freedom of speech and I think they should to a certain extent, however, I believe that it's is extremely excessive and unnecessary to force their beliefs on people in such a negative and harsh way. A majority of people aren't going to see a sign that says "god hates fags" and completely change their perspective on homosexuality solely because of the sign and people screaming their beliefs at them. If they are sharing god's beliefs I don't understand why they would they do it in such a negative and aggressive way.

I taught fourth grade for two years in the Mississippi Delta and two years at an alternative high school in Western North Carolina. I have been at Tigard High School since the fall of 2003, where I teach U.S. History and Psychology.

The WBC reminds me more of a Cult than a "Church" group. Some "Manson-Like" brainwashing is taking place there.
