PSYCH STUDENTS

Here's a great link to a story on the origins of the Implicit Association Test:

It's 5 pages and quite informative. Please share your feedback on the article.

There were two things in this article that I found interesting. The first to be an example of holding two light bulbs up to each other, one being 10 watts, and the other 20 watts, only to recognize that they were 5 watts difference, if not put next to each other.

For the second one, and possibly the most interesting piece out of this article was the last test on page 4 and 5. It's very, very interesting how our minds create false images of words, just because they may fit into a category that we have already percieved. I know I thought Insect was on the first list, just showed me how wrong I was. :)

See you tomorrow!

I took 2 of the IAT's, one was the Gay - Straight and my results were that my data suggested a strong automatic preference for Straight People compared to Gay People. It really surprised me because i have Gay family and friends. I honestly thought, even after reading about the results of the Harvard researchers, that i would be neutral. I was wrong. I also took the race one. Again i was surprised by the results. I have a strong automatic preference for whites over blacks. I grew up in North Portland and have been around black people pretty much my whole life. I have had close friends that were black, i've never thought less of them as people.

I'm sure we'll have a great discussion in class tomorrow about everyones results. I'm really looking forward to class.

The reading covered a lot of stuff I felt about the IAT tests, such as unaccuracy due to hand eye coordination and manual dexterity. However after reading about the article, it altered my thoughts. Plus, I'm not too concerned about my results because they seem pretty accurate.
It's funny how we use the Western civilization and culture as the base for our beliefs and when we see something out of the norm,it catches us off guard.
