It really surprised me how many slaves Washington had - I was expecting a LOT less.. And I was expecting Jefferson had the most slaves for some unknown reason.

But wow... pretty sick.

Lago,

Get better. You don't want to miss tomorrow!

Nat,

Geek!

Roxanne,

Great comment. I am always shocked at how many slaves Washington owned too. However, that was considered the norm at the time. Both GW and TJ were wealthy Virginia landowners. Owning slaves was the norm.

What about Maurice??

What i dig about this class is how you thrash the myths we all learn in elementary school. seems like the presidents either had a good amount of slaves or hardly. america just gets dirtier n dirtier as this class moves along. later tater. i like this kind of HW.. hint.

I ended up being very far off with my estimates. I think it's odd that even presidents after Lincoln owned slaves.

Hey Carlise!
After reading through that website, George Washington really surprised me. How he treated his slaves and the amount of slaves he had, 317!!

See you tomorrow,

"(George Washington, for example, shipped a slave to the West Indies in exchange for molasses and rum, ordering that the slave be handcuffed to prevent escape.)"

~I know everyones said this but that really surprised me about Washington..and that he whipped, chained, and sold them too..sad

I dont get why people back then see the "negros" as property but not people...how did all this get started? I mean they didnt just go o Africa and say oh look...Africans...lets use them as our slaves

Thomas,

Slavery date back to the time Jesus Christ and the Bible. It's been around for a long time. Here's a helpful link for the basis of the American slave trade:

Wow, I was shocked when I read that Ulysses S. Grant owned 500 slaves, I guessed 300, I was way off. He was last president to have own slaves and had the most, I would have figures that it would be decreasing. Also even though he had the most, he didn't treat them badly(whipping, chaining, selling, handcuffing), I found that shocking. Ya know, this is long, I hope it works, because I'm not sure if I'm doing this right.

Sam Murphy,

I was right when it came to the later years but i cannot believe how many slaves that so many presidents had. What did they seriously need them for. Also, why the heck would Maurice AKA "BBQ boy" fly the Confederate Flag, he knew it would have consequences.

i just visited the understanding prejudice site, and the picture of James Knox Polks slave with the scars from being whipped really made it reality for me. I guess i just never realized how bad it actually was. I was also very surprised by how many slaves Washington owned i wasnt expecting that many.
