That's so funny that I happened to watch that last night.
I think that most parents really have no clue about the "online world" and should educate themselves better on it. But like that one mom was crazy and if anything probably made her kid rebel even more. Once your to the high school age the parents should still warn their kids about that stuff, but know that ultimatley it's their decision what they do online just as is most stuff parents don't know they're doing. I mean, parents should do what they can to prevent their child from being in danger, but there's a fine line between that and taking away their kid's privacy.

You know what is kinda weak? Out of 4 current office holders running for president (5 is you count Kucinich), Sen. Obama is in South Carolina campaigning. John McCain is in Florida campaigning. Clinton is in Arizona campaigning.

While Ron Paul and Kucinich are respecting their day jobs.

Now sure what it actually means, but it feels relevant to me.

Niz,

That sounds good. I will be on and off the Internets tonight. I may not respond back to you until around 10:00. It depends on how good Supernanny is.

I watched part of the program... Interesting, but I don't think us Tigard kids are to that extent. Or atleast no one I know is that immersed in cyberspace.

I liked how Greg compared the internet to money, it's really accurate I think lol. Their idea of a "party" is pretty sweet. Everyone sittin at a table pwnin noobs... It's pretty cool how I'm watching a video about how bad the internet is on the internet.

I think that kid at the beginning is right, most adults do struggle with electronics and technology. Something breaks here, I have to fix it, because the only other person that can is the repair guy that costs $300.

I think that that English teacher is fighting a losing battle, she can't keep people from using the internet, she can try, but eventually she's going to lose. I think SparkNotes is sometimes wrong to use, especially if they tell you not to use it. But the kid's right, there isn't enough time in the day anymore to read usually; I like to read, and I haven't really picked up a book in a couple weeks because I'm so busy.

MySpace/FaceBook is overrated in my opinion, not to mention part of the reason teens are more anti-social than they used to be. I've seen people post secrets on MySpace they never told their best friends. They seem to think that there's a wall between real life and the internet.

On the flip side, I think there are people who think isn't any sort of divide. A few weeks ago, one of my internet friends told me and my other friends that her real life best friend had just been raped, and he went to us for help; we've never met him in real life, and yet we were the first people he went to in that situation. I think that people need to understand that there isn't a solid wall, but also that they shouldn't share everything.

I think that the people that try to become popular online and then get angry/upset when it's taken away need to reevaluate a little, because stuff like that shouldn't hold you in such a way.

As for the one computer thing, that's only temporary, you can't stop a kid from buying their own computer with their own money (only reason I have my own). And it's impossible to try and get them to put it outside their room.

As for getting your kids' passwords, that's interesting. It's hard to get them to give you their passwords. And some will think it's the exact same as reading a diary, total privacy invasion.

For the one parent that actually visits the blog, there are ways to get the passwords without asking, various programs you can buy can track the internet history as well as track every keystroke. Though, once again, there's an easy work-around to it. The things they have for tracking are just too easy to get around.

There are communities on the internet for anyone. I've seen sites for neo-Nazis. There are sites helping people to commit crimes, even suicide. Yes, the internet is diverse, but that's a problem as well as a benefit.

I think part of the reason why this is out of control is how fast technology has advanced, it's going to fast for people to comprehend what's going on, so we're overwhelmed by it.

Here's an interesting video about what the inter may be like. More of a joke than anything else, but interesting nonetheless.

Sarah,

I sincerely hope your comment is accurate about the Internets and THS teens.

Casey,

Great comment as always. Are you secretly 39 years old? I was really angry with that punk senior who said that hadn't read a book in a long time. That's insane and ignorant.

7:18 PM

Blogger Casey said...

It's not insane, a lot of people in this generation don't read, I'm not sure why, but they just don't find it interesting anymore. It's a sad reality, but it's reality.

I actually had more typed up, but blogger went insane and deleted about 1/3 of what I typed >_>.

i believe the internet made the world better and more worse at the same time. It made the world better because everything such as news can be accessed by one click of a button, but also communications between people are now faster..........however the internet became a heaven for predators and cowards.......

more importantly, it has taken away one on one conversations between friends and family......

If we knew where it was, I believe it would be safe to add Casey's comment to the pwnage equation lol.

me and katie just watched the whole thing, even though we only planned to watch the first part! it was definately really interesting.

a lot of that stuff does happen online, but the media focuses more on the negatives than on the positives, such as being in contact with friends that you don't see very often. and i don't think its reasonable for parents to want to know everything going on in their kids' lives. i'm sure they didn't tell their parents everything when they were our age.

also, it's kind of contradictory that they post a video about the dangers of the internet, on the internet...

--think it can be a good idea for people to have a place for them to be themselves if they feel like they can't in their homes or at school

--think it's sad and kind of pathetic that people kill themselves over something that somebody says online. why should they care? i just don't get that.

-- think they made a good point about how sexual predators aren't all that big of a deal and that the people who have issues with them are the ones that go looking for them. i mean most kids have the sense not to respond to creepers so it's not such a huge deal

--i definatly can tell that parents don't really know their kids. even if kids don't have a secret or true identity on the internet- parents still don't know much about their kids.

--i totally agree with haglund on the fact that it is really up to the kids what they do with their life online, everyone our age hates being restricted

my parents were watching over my shoulder and they thought it was a good show too

ACK!

i just saw a couple of pictures from that thinspiration website that that girl went on.

those are some scary thin girls

ugh..i have no idea why anyone would do that to themselves
i love junk food way too much to give it up

it's just sad that people think they need to be that thin and go to those extremes

Carlisle, if my calculations are correct, and I receive my estimated participation, and discussion grade. I can score 50% on the test and maintain my current letter grade...

Though, that is no reason not to try and succeed... To immerse myself in intrinsically motivated enlightenment!

Carlisle! For the essays...do you want me to say what the Fugitive Slave act of 1850, and the Dred Scott decision, do you want to know what they are or just the responses of the North and South to them?

9:24 PM

Blogger Mr. Carlisle said...

Ah Kyle, way to shoot for the average! I really wish we had plus/minus grading.

Saraga,

I'm glad you and Katie watched the program. I guess it's kind of contradictory to have the program on the Internets, but I seriously doubt very many teens will watch it. Go read a book!

Michelle,

You made some great points. Do you think I should show that video for social psych next semester?

Wow Kyle, you're cool. If my calculations are correct, if I get 272 of the 180 points remaining, I can get an A.

9:32 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Haha, sorry, but I am conditioned within this flawed education system to confide in numbers and letters, not knowledge... If I managed to score 100% on these last three things, I'd still stay the same letter grade.

In principal of plus minus is good, but the way it benefits me personally, is not... So it's pretty cool that it didn't pass.

You can do it Chris! By the power of John Amos, you can do it!

Someone asked for this (I think)? I decided to have the link in my name go to the page with the most recent version of the "pwnage equation", for no real reason other then to see if it would work. Note that the dispute over the location of Chris's joke was never actually settled. Now then...

Lol, jk, maybe...

Thanks Dan, let the pwnage commence

Carlisle, i think that would be a good video to show for social psych because most people have a myspace or facebook and it's interesting, not a boring monotone video.

7:06 PM

Blogger Mr. Carlisle said...

Michelle,

What's your example of a monotone video from Psych? I can't recall any videos like that.

7:20 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

there aren't any in that class

just some other videos that teachers have shown before

7:26 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think Myspace is *that* big of a deal, at least not with anyone I know. There will always be girls with slutty pictures and people with too many friends that they don't know in real life. But having parents know about it probably wouldn't stop it. Teenagers find ways to do things secretly when they have to.

8:29 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow... That was pretty disturbing...
Personally, I almost never have time to go on Facebook or MySpcae anymore... And I knew these kinds of things were happening on these websites, but not THIS bad...
I guess I'm the "naeve" person...
I find it so sad how some people feel like they can only be themselves online- It makes you wonder...Is the world really that judgemental and unforgiving that we as a population, constantly make others feel like they can't be themselves around us?
This was truly an eye-opener for me.... and a very scary wake-up call...
All I can say is WOW.
