Charlotte and John,

Here's the deal, the Radical Republicans in Congress needed a way to get rid of Johnson. The Congress passed the Tenure of Office Act stating essentially forbidding Johnson from firing members of his cabinet that Lincoln appointed.

Lincoln's Sec. of War, Edwin Stanton, despised Johnson's pro-Southern Reconstruction policies and was a vocal critic of his policies. Johnson eventually fired him and now Congress had a legal reason to go after him. Remember, the Constitution is somewhat vague about impeachable offenses for the president. Johnson was impeached and he nearly lost his presidency. He survived by one vote in the Senate!

Hope that makes it more clear. We will discuss tonight's reading on Monday. Great video for you guys tomorrow on Reconstruction. We will finish it on Monday. There may not be any reading this weekend. Just good old fashioned studying.

While civilization has been improving our houses, it has not equally improved the men who are to inhabit them. It has created palaces, but it was not so easy to create noblemen and kings.
