Howard shouldn't be allowed to have that store. If the Reverend owns the building, then he should be able to take it over and put it to better use.
Does Howard really even get enough business to keep the store running?

Haglund!

Here's the definition of a trust:

Stockholders of several competing corporations turn in their stock to trustees in exchange for a trust certificate entitling them to a dividend. Trustees ran the companies as if they were one.

Essentially trusts were monopolies. It's a method of dominating the competition and controlling a particular market. A small percentage of corporations controlled huge portions of markets for certain products. It's capitalism on steroids. The federal government's laissez-faire policies (hands off, little/no gov't regulation) helped the increase the number of trusts in the U.S. T.R. and Taft went after Trusts. Wilson chose to limit the amount of protective tariffs in order to increase competition.

I hope this helps. I wil explain this more tomorrow in class.

While I think it's disgusting anybody would want to sell things like KKK robes, I don't think it's illegal. The government should not have the right to tell people what they can sell. If it's his place he should be able to do whatever he wants.

While I see the view point on the other side, I have to agree with Stephen. It is consider morally wrong in todays society. But the government shouldn't/doesn't have the power to tell a person what he/she is allowed to sell in their own store.

Now the fact that this Kennedy man owns the building, he should have the power to kick the shop keeper out. But since this disagreement as to who owns the place is going on, then Kennedy doesn't have the right to tell Howard that he can not sell what he wants to sell.

Also, this whole "painful past" and shouldn't be "showing" is just silly. Just because it was "bad" doesn't mean that we should hid it. We should openly embraces it. It's part of what made the United States the United States we have today. And with out things such as slavery, or lynching we wouldn't be anywhere near the great country we are today. We would be more like Canada, with nothing interesting to learn in history class.

Wow, sorry for the long tangent. I just got out of TOK and have this what is moral thing going on in my head..(even though we talked about how math doesn't really exist on the solid ideas we though it did)

This kind of reminds me of that guy who owns the bbq store. That guy is just terrible to sell things like that in a store. I'm surprised the local government hasn't really tried to do anything to stop him. Major kudos though to the guy who is boycotting the store, Kennedy I think his name was. This situation is a tricky one though. The guy who owns the store could argue that he has freedom of speech and his store is private property. But I really think he has gone way to far. Advertising and selling openly racial products is just evil. The dude needs to find something else to do with his time that will add to the community instead of cause tension between groups of people.
