1900s America

Here's a link to some photographs by Jacob Riis, a photographer who documented the plight of the urban poor at the turn of the century.

Sad. These pictures help further exemplify the vast gap between rich and poor.

Do you think that harsh living/working conditions helped spur the socialist movement? Of course I still think that socialist nations are uniquely worse off, but I think that horrible conditions like these probably fueled the fire of socialist/communist doctrines (not only in America but elsewhere).

There's been a history of blame on the "evils" of capitalism and how it "poisons" society but I think that a full rejection of capitalism causes the poor to be even worse off.

Wow, and I was just going to post that I thought it was depressing to see the lack of attention given to the poor.

Communism doesn't cause the poor to be worse off. The problem with communism is that the incentive to work in capitalism, which is money, had to be replaced with a new incentive. That new incentive commonly became essentially "not dying". If you didn't work hard and be a good Communist you were arrested and a lot of times executed. There are a lot of Social Democracies and Socialist Governments around the world that prosper. The average lifespans are longer and the people are better educated than Americans. In Sweden, every single citizen who wants one gets a free college education. Imagine if the United States did that? Just some food for thought.

Anyway, these pictures are incredible...
