E. Genovese reading: The Slave South: An Interpretation

                                 Reading tips for tonight's homework:
1. Genovese is a neo-Marxist historian. Basically this reading is about slavery from a communist perspective.

2. Look closely at how Genovese describes the economic problems of the South that were caused by slavery.

3. Examine how slaveholders viewed those who were critical of slavery.

A slightly dryer read than last time. Genovese is quick to point out slavery's weak productivity as a result of an indifferent labor force. What I find interesting is his examination of how the South contrasted with the North culturally. Genovese saw the pre-Civil War South as aristocratic and anti-bourgeois, and he saw these cultural aspects as factors that contributed to the South's dependence on a declining economic system.

P.S. It's Mark Twain's birthday!
