Unless the name directly offends those that it references/honors/insults I don't think it should be changed. Even if offended I don't think anything could be done to change the name as it stands as a free right of speech. If a team called themselves the ninjas, samurais, or even tofu I wouldn't be offended.
I don't see a problem with this. Every owner has the right to name the team what they want, so long as it's appropriate. The mascot was obviously made without any ill intent
Just like it said in the video, the name was not made to be offensive in any way. Although, there is a chance that someone would have been offended by it. Out of respect I think that changing the name is a good thing to do, or at the very least they can talk to those who were offended in order to gain a better understanding and fix the situation.
No one is taking this name offensively. The video said that someone could be offended by it. I also don't feel that the mascot is inappropriate in any way so therefore, I see no problem with the name.
I think that they should change the name, because Redskin is a pretty racist term for a Native American, especially when you include the team logo. Would it be OK if a team named themselves the n-word? That probably wouldn't go over very well. I agree that people do love to say they are offended to fulfill the Warhol quote, but I believe that in this case, Native Americans have plenty of reason to be offended.
I honestly think this is more serious than what depth we give to it. I find this really offensive, it is not like I would name a slur about asian people on my team. I'm not going around calling my team, if I had one, the twinkles, bananas, small eyes, or yellow men.
This is highly racial and I think in the same way we should not call the people red skins because it is offensive on so many levels not only to the Indians, but it gives a bad reputation to people from different countries on america. We are ruining our own reputations as people of humanity. Showing that Whites consider themselves "superior".
I agree on both sides. It wasn't made to be offensive and if people aren't being offended by it then why change it? But also it does stand as a racial term and the microphone guy made a good point when asking what it would be like for the name to refer to other ethnic groups. They're both good points
Well the team logo with the Native American head wasn't meant to offend the Native American, but it was meant that they want the team possess a strong spirit like the Native American. Many people took it as an offensive because they used the name "Redskin" which is the color of the Native American skin and it sound to them like the other races are looking down on the people with red skin.
As the video never explicitly states that someone was horribly offended by the name, only that it could possibly offend someone, I don't think it should have to be changed. If a Native American were to actually complain about the name being insensitive and offensive towards them, that would be a different story.
If a team were to be named the Sauerkrauts or the Deutschs I wouldn't be offended just becuase I'm German. I honestly find it a bit ridiculous that America's obsession with political correctness has gotten to the point of considering the banning of a team name that wasn't even created to be offensive in the first place.
I'm a native South Carolinian and I attained my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. I taught fourth grade for two years in the Mississippi Delta and two years at an alternative high school in Western North Carolina. I have been at Tigard High School since the fall of 2003, where I teach U.S. History and Psychology.

Please don't call any Native American person you meet a "redskin". It won't end well.

I don't really care all that much. If the Portladn AFL team decides to be the Portland White People or the Portland Hipsters I wouldn't take offense.
