STUDENTS---READ--THINK--PARTICIPATE

There's a famous quote about the importance of learning from history that goes something like this:

"Those who forget the past are doomed to look like idiots." Or something like that. Look no further than this. Sigh.

Oh my gosh. That is horrible, I wasn't expecting that all when I clicked the link. I don't understand how you could make a sign like that and not make the connection. It is just so obvious, no disrespect intended, but either the cheerleaders were all "stupid" or it was meant as a joke. Something as devastating as the trail of tears should not be joked about. Either way, the signs should definitely be read by a supervisor before it is publically displayed.

Holy crap that is just.... no. How can that even happen? How could the students even allow that themselves??? The fact that the teacher is having all histoy classes re-teach the subject of the Trail of Tears is crazy too! But in this case it might just be necessary

The winners here are the Hoover High cheerleaders because now the are the second lest intelligent cheer team in Alabama. Way to go McAdory High cheer squad. You didn't pull a "The Legend of the Titanic", but got darn close when is came to disrespect for the dead. At least you acknowledged they died while LofT had an octopus save the day and they all threw a party in downtown San Fran. Screw that movie. Even the animated Titanic film with the Mexican mice and a rapping dog had more respect. (Sorry for the tangent, what this HS did was despicable and the principal was right to take action)

Ugh..this is beyond stupid. I cant even imagine what the students were thinking when they put this up. Im surprised such a public sign wasnt approved by somebody. I realize she was on maternity leave. However, it doesnt take an idiot to realize this sign is awful.

Kids today, no respect. I am so stupefied that they would make such an offensive joke in a public place for many people to see. While the principal did the right thing by taking responsibility, it should really be up to the students to decide that that's not an appropriate banner

I was literally so shocked when I opened up the link! How could anyone think that this sign was okay or even a good idea for their football game? I wonder what the cheerleaders were thinking! The Trail of Tears is not something that you make a joke out of! I know there is generally someone who approves these signs and they were on maternity leave, but it seems like at least some people would have seen it before they displayed it in front of everyone! I am surprised no one stopped them from using that sign. Not even one of the cheerleaders tried to stop the making of their sign. This is just so wrong!

That is so bad!!! The Trail of Tears is definitely not something to joke about! I could never imagine anybody doing that, but apparently so. Cheerleaders should always have their signs checked in order to stop them from doing that again! Since the regular person assigned to check the cheerleaders signs was on maternity leave, the school should have put someone in her place.

I definitely agree with everyone else! The students should have taken action and te cheerleaders should have known better. That is sad that people would do something so offensive and just plain rude and disrespectful only to make a joke. I think the principal should have had someone else approve it though. I feel like even though the cheerleaders shouldn't have done it, they may have thought it was fine since no one told them otherwise.

Things like this just make me cringe. What was going through their minds when they made this sign is beyond me. I don't know if they just didn't understand the damage it would do or if they just didn't care, but this is beyond horrible.

Oh my goodness, how could that even happen! I can't believe that no one involved in making this sign reported it, as the cheerleaders obviously knew enough about the Trail of Tears to make reference to it. I'd like to have seen how the students and fans reacted when the sign was first brought out...

I see that this is not intentional, they did this out of ignorance. They did this because they don't understand to a degree how harsh and how cruel the trail of tears was. This was something killed families over the course of years. It is sad to see Americans not know the racial tension that some things and references would invoke. I Am sad to say that this is our friends and this is our family. All we can do is just react and hope that more pain would not be inflicted. This is a sensitive topic and many would agree. I think that there are certain things in history that should be known, and I think the Trail of Tears is definitely one of them.

This is absolutely horrible. I hope that the girls who made it were just ignorant, because the only other alternative is that they are incredibly insensitive. I think it's really good that the teachers are going back to reteach the unit, because obviously something was missed.

So this is where the stereotype dumb cheerleader comes from. But seriously, I wonder how a poster that size for all to see was never checked or that no one told them that it wasn't right. Of course it was in Alabama.
