CIVIL WAR INFO: GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND PARTICIATION POINTS

I am going to discuss Andersonville next week. Here's a primer on this horrible POW camp from the war. Check out this photo of a POW from Andersonville. ***WARNING, THIS PICTURE IS GRAPHIC IN NATURE***

Oh my God--that's terrible. I had no idea the Civil War was this destructive. And I honestly didn't know that there were even prison camps during this war, either.

The website doesn't make the prison sound as horrible as I'm sure it was. The picture is gruesome. It's strange how we were fighting against Hitler and his cruelty to people, but when it came down to it, we were basically doing the same thing. And to people who used to share a Union with us. Hmmmm

Alex,

The Civil War was incredibly DESTRUCTIVE. Over 600,000 people died fighting in the war. The Union had a horrible POW camp in New York called Ft. Elmira. However, Andersonville was the worst.

Tucker,

Alive.

Wow I honestly didn't know that about the Civil War either. That is crazy. And that picture is pretty gruesome. It is sad to think that this was one country fighting and it was ours.

That picture was disgusting!! How could he possibly be alive? He looks like he would fall apart if he moved an inch.

Ya. I think the Civil War is commonly romanticized. I've never really heard about the negative aspects of the war. I knew it was somewhat gruesome, but nothing has ever really been brought up about the horrors of the war. I'm really excited to learn about the war this week.

Did anyone else think the POW's head looked a lot like Abraham Lincoln's? Just a random observation.

Also, I can't believe a national cemetery was given as private property and used for cotton growing. Have these people no respect for the dead?

i dont undersand why the camp was build in georga for fresh water supply when they didnt get it. and the picture of the skinny guy is indeed graphic in nature, you can see his pelvic bone!!! i didnt think it was possable to get that skinny. its strange that this isnt discussed as a major thing like with what hittler did to jewish people.
