Alright, I don't believe that we can judge the race population in our IB classes because some whites even have trouble to get in. Our school district does not offer opportunities to succeed that much in our school.

Carlisle you should let the class talk more because you were practically talking half the time.

I wanted to say something regarding the minorities in IB classes. Some minority individuals may feel a sense of intimidation from the students in the class or the class itself. I believe the school should encourage those individuals to enroll in IB classes, not get as many minorities in the class just for the sake of diversity.

Jonah,

You raise a great point. No one is saying to just place random minority students in IB classes, however, I strongly believe that something should be done to encourage this.

I personally have decided that i dont want to go full IB, and im guessing a lot of minorities have to. But i do have a lot of spanish friends and take school as a joke. sure its just a small part of the minorities but i know why those kids arent.

I don't think its a problem that there is a solid barrier between most Hispanics and Whites or African Americans and Whites. If they choose to be separated then no one should force them to be integrated.

I also have an issue with what Jack said about if you are the only person from your race that signs up for an IB class then you are going to be looked down upon and object to ridicule. I would think of myself as a pioneer of sorts for my school if I was to be the only person of a certain race in my class. If people had a problem with that then they don't deserve any of my attention anyway.

The discussion was really competitive. I think whether people take IB classes is more of a cultural thing than a racial thing. Some cultures may value education and some may not.

Ivan Iverson,

I think that's easy for you to say, because you've never experienced it yourself. Even if you did feel that way, the majority of high-schoolers make decisions based on what their peers will think, whether it is conscious or subconscious.

All we need to do is make it cool to be in IB. Unfortunately that's easier said than done.

I agree with Jonah that some IB classes may seem too intimidating for some individuals of minorities. I believe that the schools should push kids more towards advanced classes, rather than telling them that it may be too difficult for them. With that attitudes, those minorities will have low self efficacy for their education and would not challenge them.

Also it might be that their teachers' has low expectations for them. A teacher's expectations for a student can be a major influence on their education.

@Jack

I'm sorry Jack, I forgot that you are also part of a minority. :)

But seriously, I didn't understand Carlisle's logic today. He said that the government needed to pass gay legislation in order to begin the movement with the people but disregarded DADT as a win for gay rights. Could you clarify Dr. Carlisle?

The minority groups are kind of getting babied here. No one is addressing the fact that they could choose to face the adversity, work hard and enroll in the classes regardless of what their counselors say. It just sounds like a lot of excuses to me.

An example could be the previous post carlisle had on his blog about the kid that was poor but still did all his hw and got a full ride to Brown.

Also, i dont agree with Malia's comment on how people that take a lot of IB classes only hang out with white people. The classes you take do not dictate who you choose to be friends with, especially based on race. Since your in an "IB" class, wouldnt you spend more time working and less time socializing?

If that were the case, then the class your in should not have much of an effect on who you hangout with. I'd also like to know why that's a naive opinion.

Lastly, I dont think having cliques and certain racial groups together is a big deal. I think who we decide to group together with is more based on our level of sociability (is that even a word?) rather than race.
The vast majority of THS is not divided up into groups based on race and even if they were, whats wrong with it?
If thats what they want to do let them do it.

I think im done, this is all what i wouldve said, but i got lost in the storm of passionate/angry comments during the discussion.

I believe Society was the opressor because they influence what goes on in the government and in the case of blacks during this time period society was not accepting them because there was no reason to according to the majority of them.

I think the solution that is not under the "seperate but equal" would be to tough through it but don't seperate whites and blacks because that makes blacks more inferior. I don't think the problem was the white mind set I believe it was more of white's pride that was in the way of accepting blacks into american society. White pride should not be so important that people lynch other people for that.

Anthony N.,
I think you're taking Malia's comment out of context to a certain extent. The vast majority of IB students @ THS are white. I think that's fairly irrefutable. Malia was saying that people tend to hang out with people in the same social strata/academic group. Of course some students can transcend these barriers, but few do. I think some of you forget that your teachers were in high school and know full well about how social cliques operate.

Mr. Carlisle,

I never said that i disagreed with the fact that ALOT of white people take IB classes. But I still think that in our current generation people are much more comfortable branching out and getting to know others regardless of who they are and that there are more people out there that transcend the class barriers than your making it out to be.

Yes I agree. IB should also be made more open in some sort of way but I'm not sure how and be considered "cool" to outsiders.
