The test that they do is so interesting, because we think of that kind of stuff as second nature, but when you see how these people react to it, it kind of shocks me. Split brain is so cool.
Its crazy that he does not even know why he drew the saw! I cant even imagine how frustrating that would be!Are lots of people bron like this? If so how many?
I am with TJ too. It would just be really confusing for me. And it has no worth for myself. Just the tests proofed unconscious thinking works and that both hemispheres function. But it wouldn't make any sense to me. You can't carry around a notebook and draw everything you see just to not know what you have seen. Maybe it is training but this training will locate in the left hemisphere which is for complex tasks. But because the left hand is working there is still no connection.
It cool how he can draw pictures without even looking or consciously thinking about it! Could he see the picture of the saw in his head but couldn't say/communicate what it was because there was no connection to the language region of left hemisphere to interpret the image to words? Or was he just totally unaware that he saw a saw?
This video made it a lot more clear for me to understand! "The mind is made up of a constellation of independent, semi-independant agents", and these agents can help us process information way outside of our conscious. really helped me have a better understand for the split-brian!
That's pretty weird how they don't see the word yet they can draw it and recognize it after. If they didn't focus on the dot and moved their eyes to focus on the picture/word, or just looked out of his left eye would he be able to communicate what he sees fine?
It's interesting and almost scary to think how much the brain controls....which is everything basically. It is also amazing how far we have come medically. The fact that we can seperate the two hemispheres of the brain in unbelievable. If i suffered from seizures i would definantly have a split brain procedure done.
This video really helped. I'm glad this guy really knows what he's saying unlike the other guy in the video you showed us in class who gets confused. It's so wierd how he can't even explain why he drew the saw!!!
I'm a native South Carolinian and I attained my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. I taught fourth grade for two years in the Mississippi Delta and two years at an alternative high school in Western North Carolina. I have been at Tigard High School since the fall of 2003, where I teach U.S. History and Psychology.

So does this mean that if we got the same surgery he had is it possible to change from being right hand dominant to left hand dominant?

Great comments everyone!!
Hayley,
Glad the video helped. I had to rush a bit in class today and I should have taken some more time on split brain info.

so if he saw the face of a murderer with his left eye, he couldn't tell you what he looked liked, but could draw him right.
