Racism, still alive and kicking

There was no need for that sign at all. The landlord fist should have just talked to the girl and asked her to maybe wash out her hair before she swam in the pool. She should have known by posting such a radical sign that there would be a lot of controversy over it. She definitely crossed the line with this sign. Sadly however, it is not a surprise that something like this would happen in our day and age still. Sign should've said: Don't P in the OOL.

How did the landlord know that it was the chemicals in only her hair? I know lots for people, both male and female that use products in their hair. It couldn't have been only her hair products. When I hear about these kinds of things I get upset that racism still exists.

I just feel very bad for the girl, finding out that she had to move because of her color. Nobody should go through this type of situation, especially nobody at a young age. I think the landlord should apologize to the family.

It is so sad that racism is still existent in this country. And worse, this probably is not the worse of the situations. That landlord shouldn't just apologize to that particular family, but to the whole apartment complex as well for causing pain to the community.

I have a little too many feelings about that story to comment on it, so I'm just going to remain neutral and say that in my opinion, I feel like racism is still thriving. I feel like people are in denial, but psychologically, everyone is racist to an extent. It seems that some parts of stereotypes are merely racism with an excuse (for saying what's being said). Racism affects everybody. For example, one person once asked me, "You're Japanese, right? Planning any more terrorist attacks on America?" It gets pretty intense and hurtful. In my opinion though, since you're not going to be wiping out an entire race, one should just simply learn to cope and accept others. Honestly, it's stupid.

Yup racism lives, yup this was wrong and unjustified. But the police should monitor this building if this story is in the news and the owner didn't get convicted...people know its not illegal to be a (something) but will gladly discourage that in not so nice ways.

Morally, this story is wrong. But it is legal. Even though the landlord might be discriminating against that girl, it is her property that the girl is living on, and the landlord has the right to move her out.

I agree with Harrison- yeah it's horrible, but it's the landlord's right to do so... welcome to life, it's unfair.

@ Harrison. Discriminating against people isn't legal. Even if it is private property. The landlord can kick her out but he cant have a sign that says whites only.

The sign should not have been put up, only one girl had caused a weird reaction in the pool, and the landlord could have easily told her to use a different product rather than put up a sign saying nothing that applies in the least.

This article was very confusing to me. It said that there was a landlord who owned the swimming pool; yet, it mentioned that this was a public swimming pool. Assuming that this was a public swimming pool only to the landlord's tenants, then I would argue that this is within the landlord's rights. The landlord has the right to make the rules for his/her property. It is lamentable and infuriating to me that this girl was treated unkindly. However, within the definition of freedom is the right to hurt others.

I think this is horrible, and completely wrong. And I agree with Vanessa Tran. Also, I have the picture of the McDonalds thing that Chabreck was talking about in class, but I don't know how to put it up..

Wait, the landlord's reasoning for the sign was the girl's hair products? Obviously the landlord is a racist person and is looking for an excuse to discriminate against black people. I do believe racism still exists. I've heard from a friend who lives in Texas, that in a small town he visited, a sign from the early 1900s that says "No colors allowed" was still up. And it's not just black people that racism is directed towards nowadays. I hear people making racist comments towards Mexicans, Middle Easterns, etc

I think the landowner's excuse is pretty bad. Even if it was a black person who messed up the pool does that mean you ban all black people as opposed to talking to the person who messed up the pool? Secondly, how would one even know that it was that black kid who did it? Her course of action isn't justified by the situation.
