This is very offensive and seems like something straight out of an Adam Sandler movie. If it was I would probably laugh but the fact this is real is despicable.

Wow, I have to wonder how and why a high school in 1910 decided on making their mascot a seemingly random ethnic group. Why not just be the Coachella Valley Wildcats? This seems like something that shouldn't be an issue, but, as it somehow is, I think the best solution for the school and ADC is to just change the mascot, assuming the ADC is willing to help cover the costs of new school merch and decor.

Also, in an attempt to find more ridiculous mascots, I stumbled across this absolute jewel of an article that had me cackling in seconds:

OHHHHHH YEAHH!!!!!!! FIRST COMMENT!!!!!

This is horrible, I think just brings a level of disrespect not only to arabs, but when other ethnic groups see that American's condone this type of racism, then they have the right to justify racist and prejudice acts as well. Don't even say this is not racist that is not even debatable. I think this brings an amount of stupidity to American people and shows how bigoted we as a people really are. So in other words, I now know why other countries think Americans are ignorant and stupid. "WE THE PEOPLE" do not carry ourselves as respectable Americans. We are doing quite the opposite from respectable citizens of the world. I see the joke that it was fun and games. I know this mascot can be seen as "funny or unique" but I also see that this is disrespectful to many racial groups. Is it okay to name Tigard high school the Koreans, Lebanese, or Lithuanian? ABSURD!!!! I see that they should immediately change the name because it is not only awkward from a 3rd party view, but it is not respectful of our recent political issues.

This is awful! How could this high school not even realize how offensive they were being? There were people in the school that were trying to excuse it saying that they were honoring the Arabs, but I doubt that. I think that they should change their mascot!

Whether or not the school made their mascot, the Arabs, to be offensive or not, I believe they should change their mascot. I do not believe it is right for their mascot to be dancing with a belly dancer during half time either. That just seems like it can be very offensive.

Has this never been an issue until recently? Nobody decided that that name might not be right until now? That's a bit shocking. And Katie brings up a really good point; why Arabs? It just seems so far out in left field. Calling your sports team the Indians or Redskins is super offensive too, but they were a part of American history. Their decision has some logic behind it. (Albeit, not very much.) The connection to dates he makes is not a good enough excuse to make a culture and a group of people look bad. And if that old guy is so thankful for dates, why not call the team the Angry Palms or maybe even the Arab Palms or Arab Dates? That seems less offensive than misrepresenting a race of people. This might have flown back whenever this school was founded, but times have changed. Being stuck in the past like that old white guy lingering around the front of the school isn't good. They should just change the name and move on.

How did they come up with this mascot to begin with? Wouldn't certain students at that school feel uncomfortable?

That belly dancing though.. How is that even appropriate for a public event? How is that appropriate for a HIGH SCHOOL event?

I'm so shocked by this I don't even know how to react. I never would have imagined a school with this mascot and what they do to get the crowd pumped up..

That old man... I think I'm gonna go be friends with him because he seems so knowledgeable. Because all of us in the U.S. sincerely wish to thank Arabs for the dates... Not for anything else because the dates are EVERYTHING. *heavy sarcasm intended*

No offense to the people who are saying that this is why other countries think we are stupid but, I disagree. America can not be defined from little things like this racial stereotype. We are stupid for expressing racial stereotypes but, yet that is being used against in defense of a racial stereotype. Sounds a little hypocritical to me. Anyways, that was relatively unrelated. I think that their mascot as been around for several years, why should they have to change it? It is not any different than the Indians or the Redskins, whom have tried and failed in ridding their tribe names from team names. The addition of the belly dancer may have taken it a little too far but, other than that, this team is not being anymore disrespectful towards a race than Native American team names are.

This is one of those situations that reminds me that common sense isn't common anymore. This is pathetic and extremely offensive. They should definitely change the mascot, especially because of the wave of Islamaphobia that has hit the US after the 9/11 attacks.
And also, the White old man says that it's okay to do this? Gee, that sounds familiar...

Suppose that the high school wanted to say thank you to the Middle Eastern countries, but they might find it offensive as if the high school were making fun of them.

I'm not really sure what to think about this video. It seemed offensive but I don't think the High School meant to be offensive. I guess it is a matter of how other people or for this instance, how Arabs feel about this situation.

Why did it take so long for the ADC to contact the high school? I would think something like this would have been brought forth a while ago, I mean seriously. At least they are meeting to discuss it and what it should be.

The only questions I'm left with are who would think to create a mascot as stereotypical and offensive as this, and how did they get away with it for so long?

HAHAHAH this is great. I don't think its offensive. I don't think there's any harm being done hear. What annoys me is all these comments on hear. How are some little white kids going to tell me this is offensive. When they have no connection to Arab blood at all. It's not like their mascot is towel head or sand ni**er. Its no different then your mascot being the Indians. Its there school mascot who the hell cares. The only reason the Arab community is offended because Arabs are proud people and they don't understand our culture.
