Psychology students

Welcome to Psychology. I really want to increase the involvement of Psych students on the blog. From time to time I will have videos and links to readings and websites on the blog for you to examine. You can earn participation points by commenting on the blog.

Here's how to comment:
1. Click on comment.
2. You will see a large box for you to write your comment.
3. Once you have written your comment, click on "nickname". Type your first name with your class. For example, Bob--Class 4A or Bob--Class 4B.
4. Type in the scrambled letters for word verification (this prevents me from getting spam).
5. Hit enter and your comment should appear.

If you have any trouble with this, please let me know ASAP. My e-mail is mcarlisle@ttsd.k12.or.us

I'm looking forward to a great semester. Good luck.

Because Carlisle said I could:

Welcome to the blog newbies! Actually get involved this semester, it got boring only talking to other History students.
-------------------------------------------------------
Also, if you don't want to have to worry about people impersonating you, make a free account (if you have a Google account already, you're set, log in with that).

In regards to that small discussion that you turned into a food-fight, Carlisle:

I believe that depending on the industry, the government should be more or less involved, when it comes to things that are an obvious public health concern (food, medicine, etc), there should be strict regulations (as in an FDA that actually works). Industries that produce capitol goods should also be tightly regulated, so that there is good quality control in the things being used to build our economy.

As for other, more commercial goods, such as computer stuff, there should still be regulation, but less so. This allows for more competition, which is healthy, to a degree.

In regards to the minimum wage, it should be in place, and it should be higher at the national level (even WA ($8.07), CA ($8.00), and OR ($7.95) high minimum wages are tough to live off of). A minimum wages promotes economic growth. Can you pay a guy $3.50 and hour? Yeah, does it help the nation? No, it makes it impossible to live off of, you're not making enough money to live off, you're certainly not making enough to spend on goods. No money is flowing into the economy.

Would I like to be rich? Yes! Is my goal in life to be rich? No, I want to make enough to have have a comfortable lifestyle, but I don't want to be wallowing in money. I wouldn't know what to do with it, first off; second off, since I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it, I would just save it, which hurts the economy, and is just a waste of money. Do some people deserve to be rich? Perhaps, do sports stars? No, they don't do anything worthy of making millions of dollars a month.

Of course, me being somewhat communistic may make my views slightly skewed.

Also: Kansas clocks in with the lowest minimum wage in the country, with $2.65 an hour. They have a state law that excludes from coverage any employment that is subject to the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (I pretty much copied and pasted that). Wyoming and Georgia also have minimum wages lower than the national level of $5.85, with $5.15 each.

Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi have no state minimum wage law.

You were right, the south is still lagging behind the north!

Casey,

I'm pretty sure that states cannot opt out of the FLSA. There's a national minimum wage. It use to be $5.15/hour and Congress recently raised it. The rate from KA is probably for service employees like waitstaff. Oregon is different in that regard as well. Waitstaff get the minium wage plus tips. In a lot of states waistaff get a really low hourly rate so they can make up for the low pay with tips.

Ridiculously late, but whatever:

I got those wage numbers from here. It's the Department of Labor, so I'm gonna trust it. They never clarified about what that actually meant, so you may be right.

Also, Carlisle, in our class, when you said "People aren't going to join the alcohol..." I think you're wrong about that, that quote is evidence enough that you yourself have joined the alcohol.

I need help with the homework. What do you put in the boxes that say their focus and their explanantion of "Billy". I hope you get this in time. If not I will see you on Monday before school.

11:14 AM

Blogger Mr. Carlisle said...

Jessica,

For the box labled "Focus", you simply put what each approach deals with. For example, for the Biological Approach you would write genes, hormones, brain anamolies, etc.

For the "explanation of Billy" box, write down examples from the case study that deal with that approach. Try your best and if it's not totally complete that's okay. I will explain it in full detail next class. Good luck.
