I read the real story and apparently John Smith had a significantly higher cool factor in the disney movie than in real life. They did really change the ages of John and Pocahontas for the disney movie though, that was quite a shocker. It's probably a good thing, cause it would be a bit weird if they put some romance scenes in there and they used their actual ages of 28 and 11.

Yeah, I don't think the Disney crowd would've been down with that kind of a romance.

Heh, I haven't watched that since like kindergarten! Forgot how good it was. Just read the homework and it said that the marraige doesn't work. So sad! But I must say I prefer the Disney version of history a lot better. John Smith is a loooot better looking (I just looked at his real pic) with long golden locks of hair and it's fun pretending that everything has a happy ending.

Kristin,

John Rolfe took her to England and she dies not soon after. Very sad indeed.

I have to say, this clip of Pocahontas is the most I've ever actually seen of this movie. However, I do know most of its story, and I think the changes they made were necessary, however weird they may be. I don't think the real story would have gone over well with small children.

I have never really seen all of Pocahontas. But I do think it is interesting how Disney changes things from real life to make them appeal to children. It was necessary but interesting. The John looks way different.

V,

I haven't really seen the whole pocahontas movie. But the way Disney presents the movie for little kids is just interesting. The real one we should watch in class!!

I found Pocahontas very misleading in that short clip, I tried to pick up a bear cub just as they did but I was viciously mauled instead. Now I see why bears are the number one threat.

I seriously have never watched Pocahantas before. I think it's kind of sad.

I think the Jamestown: Hollywood Version looks pretty good just because Colin is in it. I love his movies:]
I also think we should watch it in class.

Okay besides The Lion King, Pocahontas has got to be my favorite Disney movie. I know every word to that song. And at the end of the first movie, John Smtih leaves without Pocahontas. So Disney isn't completely wrong. In fact, in the second movie (I have three nieces) John Rolfe actually does marry Pocahontas and take her back to England. Just thought I'd get that cleared up.

whats with you people seriously!!! every comment says " i have never actually seen all of pocahontas". thats like a classic. i love the song, "savages, savages, simply just not human" or however it goes. and the settlers are all dancing and singing all in sync with their pick axes. its wonderful. i dont know if i want to read my book now carlisle. it will ruin my image of pocahonatus.

well first of all i really want to see that hollywood version of it cuz the girl in it is mighty perty ^_^, and i really like the disney song even if it isnt true.

but anyway, the disney song just makes me happy inside cuz of the whole earthy talk in it and cuz im interested in both te fictional native american culture and the real one. whats sad is that children might actually belive that all of it happend that way until there 9th-10th grade. they should teach the serious history sooner than they do.

why dont they just teach us the truth to begin with!! why confuse us??

I actually DID know that their ages were totally Disney-ified for Pocahontas. Does the live action one leave out the John Rolfe part? Because the Smith-not-marrying Pocahontas thing was news to me.

im really disappointed that disney's representation of jamestown and John smith isn't accurate. i mean wouldn't it be cool if john Smith was this ken doll who fell madly in love with an indian? it just makes for better history lol

Man, I'm not too dissapointed I missed out on that one as a child. But it really is fascinating how fast they overcame the whole language barrier.

It's really cool though that the natives are all intact with nature and stuff; not wanting to destroy it all. Of course- look where it got them.
I saw a shirt once with the Popular Native figures on it (Pocanhantas, Jeronamo, Sitting Bull, etc) and underneath it said "Fighting terrorist forces since 1492." That was a little too close to home for my liking.

The trailer for the "New World" Is pretty epic there.

Jeez I haven't watched Pocahontas since like I was in elementry? I remmebering thinking Pocahontas was asian...Sad even my parents told me so. I like how "Percy" is protrayed as a dog in the disney film instead of as a person like he was in real life.

I think it is interesting how such an important part of history is so distorted. This has to be true with almost any part of history. Is it really possible for history to be unbiased? Why would they choose this story to re-create?
