Read. Think. Comment.

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, which guaranteed that women have a constitutional right to an abortion.

I found Greenhouses' claim that the move to relax state abortion laws came from the medical and legal professions shocking because it contradicted everything I was ever told, that women's rights groups, such as Planned Parenthood, spearheaded the movement. It makes sense that the powerful medical and legal lobbies would have a financial interest in not letting patients die because the law prevented them from having an abortion and would have the best chance of influencing the government, as opposed to the less powerful and wealthy women's rights groups. The fact that top Republicans only 40 years ago were more supportive of abortion rights than Democrats shows how much influence, perhaps, the Christian Right has had on the Republican Party.

I don't think elimination abortion would solve the problem. We would have to make birth control more assesible and teach safe sex starting at a younger age. People who don't want there baby will go to deperate measures to get rid of it and that could lead to some serious health threatening issues.

I agree with the Catholics that O'Brien described in the article, saying that a majority of them believe abortion is really a decision that is only between a woman and her doctor. This subject should not be left up to the government's jurisdiction.
I also agree with Melissa, that aborting a pregnancy (I do NOT mean after rape, incest, or a question of the mother or fetus's health) is really only treating a side effect of the real problem.
