I will explain it more in-depthly tomorrow, but essentially the purpose of the Dawes Act of 1887 was tie Native Americans to the land. The federal gov't gave Native Americans a specific amount of land and they were expected to farm the land. The gov't hoped that Native Americans would adopt the values of white-Americans and become farmers and leave Western settlers alone.
I'm a native South Carolinian and I attained my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. I taught fourth grade for two years in the Mississippi Delta and two years at an alternative high school in Western North Carolina. I have been at Tigard High School since the fall of 2003, where I teach U.S. History and Psychology.

Chris,
I will explain it more in-depthly tomorrow, but essentially the purpose of the Dawes Act of 1887 was tie Native Americans to the land. The gov't hoped that Native Americans would adopt the values of white-Americans and become farmers and leave Western settlers alone.
Hope this helps.
