Carlisle, could you explain the Dawes Act of 1887 please. I don't understand how the book worded it...

Chris,

I will explain it more in-depthly tomorrow, but essentially the purpose of the Dawes Act of 1887 was tie Native Americans to the land. The federal gov't gave Native Americans a specific amount of land and they were expected to farm the land. The gov't hoped that Native Americans would adopt the values of white-Americans and become farmers and leave Western settlers alone.
