After all that we learned in class about african-american history, it was pretty amazing to see a black man being sworn in to lead our country. There are many things that I'm looking forward to during his term in office. I'm really curious to see what courses of action he will be taking to fulfill his promises. There are many serious problems that are facing our nation and by the looks of it, we're not going to see the end of it anytime soon. Because of this I'm sure there will be people getting impatient and blaming the president for not getting the problems fixed sooner. but then again, we have been through situations that were much worse so only time will tell how his presidency will turn out but personally, I think he's gonna do a good job.

I am feeling optimistic about the next four years. I'm wondering how well that stimulus package will do and if that 16-month timetable for Iraq is the right choice (I know you know my feelings regarding that issue).
Also, if Obama does indeed shut down Gitmo then I am wondering where all those detainees will go.
6:35 PM
The detainees can stay at my house for a while. As long as they don't eat all the chips.
I do think that Obama is setting the bar pretty high for himself, and after all the hype, he may have a difficult time reaching it. Although from what I've seen so far, if there is a person who seems to fit the role of president right now, it's Obama.

Sidney,
Excellent, well thought out comment. Thanks a lot!
Narintohn,
The detainees would most likely be tried in American criminal courts. However, some may be let go or possibly deported.

I feel like so many more things are possible and achievable now that we have reached this very large milestone. After everything that happened in the past with African Americans, we can still come this far as to elect one into the white house. I'm pretty sure this doesn't just affect all the African Americans with dreams but it affects all other races or what not. It's a pretty big deal, people should stop worrying about whether or not he'll be assassinated and really think about what this means for our country and our futures.

Sorry I missed school Carlisle. I was sick, but I did watch the inauguration live. Obama's speech was very good and I know he is the right man for these seemingly impassable difficulties for our nation. The one major thing that an Obama presidency means for me is...
NO MORE BUSH! YAAAAAAAY!!!!! I was so happy to see him get on that helicopter and leave, that moment made my year so far.
Speaking of Former President Bush I heard that their is a debate in the new administration whether or not to investigate the previous adminstration for war crimes.
Additionally, according to various international treaties regarding the usage and running of torture programs (according to MSNBC and CNN) Former President Bush could be arrested as a war criminal in 145 countries. So he is pretty much stuck in the good ol' US of A. HAHA
Additionally, even though this is an incredibly overused statement it really is amazing that an African-American person was elected to the highest office of the land, is awesome.
I believe that this administration will bring all the change that Americans have been waiting for for over 8 brutally long years of absolutely horrid leadership from Washington. This day marks a new post Bush era of American history and renews my lost sense of American pride and justice.

He definitely has a lot of hype and expectations that seem almost unattainable to meet perfectly. I think he can definitely get us going in the right direction and hopefully change things up. He seems like he keeps his composure quite well, and that will help him throughout the presidency. I'm also interested to see what happens with Guantanamo. It seems like a huge step just to shut it down so abruptly. Maybe a slow closure would be easier to deal with, but we'll see. I'm really excited to see how he handles all the curveballs that come his way. It's awesome that an African American is president, something that seemed unreal not that long ago.

Wow, a trio of astute and sincere comments about the election. You guys never cease to impress me.
Erik,
Make sure you read the reading closely. It will help you with an essay question.

After Obama was elected presented, i was pretty satisfied because i felt that throughout the presidential debates he was on top of things. He knew what he was talking about, he knew what tasks he would have to get done to make this country better, and best of all he was confident in all of his answers. When Obama was sworn in today, i got a feeling that there is a change coming to the United States and that we picked a great man to represent our country!
GO OBAMA!!!~~YES WE CAN!!
8:27 PM
So, I talked to you about this a little earlier, but whatever. :)
So for me, the election is the most important on for my life so far.
For one, for more than half of my life Bush has been president. I remember when Clinton was president, but I was in first grade, so I was into the issues. haha. I felt more involved with the election than the one four years ago too.
Secondly, my the fact that Obama is now the President of the United States, and the first African-AMerican President. For My family, it means a lot. We calculated that not too many generations ago, some one on my Dads side was probably a slave. We know for a fact that someone on my dads side was a share crop farmer. My Grandfather and Grandmother, were from NC.My Grandfather when he was in college, wouldnt be allowed to eat at certain resturants. My Godparents(really my brothers, but whatever) Were involved in civil rights a lot as well. When Obama was first elected, it was unbelievable. My Great Aunt, as I said before, was involved in the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King Jr.
Now Obama really is president, and its still unbelievable. From all of the struggles and everything from the past to now,Obama being is president is amazing. I know people see it as really I know him being African-American is talked about a lot, but its really important. Its important to Me, my family, my family from the past, important to the USA, and to the world. I wonder what it will be like in some 70 years, when I can say, "yes, I saw the first african-American Presidnet of the Untied States be sworn in." Its something I cant really describe. For me, the country is really a different place. I know that tommorow I will wake up, and I can say that my president, our presidnet, is and African-American. Its really, really amazing.
I am also Excited to see what change will occur in our country and the world in the next 4 years. I know that in 2 years, I will be in college, so my life will be totally different. Im nervous, but excited for the future.
yeahh, thats a lot, and I could say more, but I wont right now. :)

Lauren and Vikrant,
Thanks for your comments. Good stuff.

Well here is my opinion... I watched the inauguration in two classes today and his speech was very well done both times. I thought he portrayed himself well and showed confidence which is obviosly important in our president. But honestly I am tired of hearing about how much history this is. He is black so what, honestly would he have been elected if he wasn't? I had a someone say to me..."I want Obama to win because I think it is about time we had a black president". I am sure and hope he will do great the next four years I am excited to see what happens. But I can't stop thinking about "how far America has come" by electing a black president. In Obamas speech today I didn't count how many times he mentioned or hinted at the fact he was African American but I know it was more than once. I was thinking ok thanks for reminding me I didn't notice. Too me it's kind of like rascism will not go away when it is constantly brought up of what it once was...I don't know if that makes sense but I can't find the right way to say it that sounded kinda bad. Maybe it's ignorence I dunno. Like I said I am excited to see what the next for years bring us. Congratulations President Obama.

from what i could tell, all the things that he said in his speech seem like the same guarentees that could be made by any presidential canadate today or even in the past. it will be interesting to see if he has any different approaches he might have to problems i suppose, but to me it dosent make much difference. im not that big on politics, it just dosent appeal to me. i dont think that any president can make complete and total difference in social issues, not with the check and balence system and the country being divided on political stances. my opinions on things arent very informed though, so i may not have any idea what im talking about. maybe someday i will pay attention to the two different sides and decide for myself, but right now i dont think im fit to take any side or determan how i feel about a presidency. when it comes down too it all the presidents make these claims for "change" being a good thing and it will be done, but is change really that necessary? everything happens for a reason, and everything seems balenced exept for some things here and there. and even if our society was corrupt in some way and change was needed, i have noticed that people get all exited about it but then it ends up not much happens or people demand even more change after the change is accomplished and the cycle starts over in just a mess of unquenchable change lol. andyway, i didnt read this over after or change it in anyway so this is pretty raw and may not make sense even too me...at least i tryed ^_^
10:28 PM
I know this isn't nearly as deep as what other people have said, but I'm just really glad that America is starting to move past only allowing White, Male Land-Owners to make a difference.
Yay America!
6:37 PM
I am personaly glad to see a fellow liberal take office! that having been said, I think Obama's time in office is not going to involve nearly as much change as he leads us to believe - alot of people seem to have failed to remain skeptical. Nothing against optimism, but I feel pretty comfortable now saying that there will not be any radical changes in foreign policy, although as for the economy, I could not even pretend to know how the situation is going to unfold ( who does with this global economy?). I do have great hope that Obama's election will help to alter the social atmosphere, and fix some of the great social injustices of our time. But again, I'm still quite unsure of Obama( politicians of all parties and backgrounds have, "in a few rare instances," failed to follow through on all of their promises). I think it's only appropriate to say that history will judge him on what he does in office, not what he said he was going to do on the campaign trail. All in all, the political atmosphere is quite stale in this year of 2009, as are most politicians- and aside from being an african-american, I have absolutely no reason to think any different of Obama. I'll just have to give him my full support, and hope for the best
P.S. I took a very strong disliking to Pres. Obama's coronation ceremony yesterday.
8:37 PM
Joey,
Why didn't you like Obama's inauguration?
8:44 PM
I thought a cool moment was when Bush and Obama walked together to the helicopter and shook hands before Bush got onto the helicopter. It was cool to see the transfer of power really happen.
10:20 PM
Coronation ceremony? I wasn't aware that Obama was becoming a king as well.
Speaking of power transfer, I still think it's funny that Joe Biden was technically President for 5 minutes becuase of the delay. Carlisle, will you be putting up his portrait as well?
6:43 AM
Negative Carsh.
6:47 AM
I agree with many of the comments that have been said previously. I think it will be cool and interesting that when I am older and have kids and they go through school and are in history. They will be learning about the presidency of Obama and the history that made in the country. It will be cool to be able to tell my kids that I was a junior and in an American history class when that was happening. I also found it cool when during his speech I think it was, they showed Kenya watching the inauguration. I think it just shows how big of an impact this is making everywhere. I also think that Obama has a lot to live up to with all that he has mentioned of the changes he wants to make. It will be interesting to see how the country reacts to his presidency in the next four years.
4:04 PM
I think one the greatest things that i took away from watching the inaugural speech and commentaries on it later was how President Obama talked about how 50 years ago a black man wouldnt be seated in a all-white restaurant and now here he is leading the greatest nation in the world. It is spectacular how far the united states has come in the civil rights movement.
9:59 PM
He seems to be the absolute solution to the American problem and Im really interested in what he is actual going to be capable of doing. However, I am not glad that McCain lost.

I can't say that I am entirely thrilled that a democratic leader is now president, however I know life's not about the cards you are dealt with but what you do with those cards. I just hope Obama isn't bluffing.
What was amazing to me about Obama's Inauguration was not only seeing how many Americans it affected but watching the world celebrating it as well. I think it's motivating for anyone not just African Americans, that anyone can rise up in any situation and do what seems like the impossible. What an incredible experience to live through!
