Here's some more information on the Whiskey Ring scandal that transpired during Grant's presidency. I also found more info on the Credit Mobilier scandal.

Was the $1,200,000 figure in the Whiskey Ring scandal in 1857 currency. Even now that's a LOT, but back then...wow. Did Grant not know about these?

Aah I meant to put a question mark after the first sentence. And when I said "these," I meant these two scandals.

I don't really believe that Grant had direct involvement with either scandal. However, both scandals were conducted by Republicans and they tarnished the reputation of President Grant because he was essentially the head of the Republican Party as president.
