Essential Grammar Rules

IB History students, please refer to this great website if you need help with some basic rules of grammar. Don't forget, general writing conventions are worth 20 points in your overall IA grade.

ATTENTION IB HISTORY STUDENTS

Okay, I just got through reading your Plans of Investigation. Mr. McCarty will give them back to you on Monday. The main concern I have with some of them is, SOME OF YOU ARE BEING TOO VAGUE in your Plan of Investigation!!!!! GIVE ME SPECIFICS!! If you're discussing whether or not the New Deal was effective in ending the Great Depression, tell me some specific policies/programs from the New Deal that you are going to examine. It was obvious that a few of you did not conduct much research at all before you wrote you Plan of Investigation. I need to see some specific topics discussed in Part A or your IA will not be good.

If you PROCRASTINATE, don't ask the questions that need asking, or try to complete this assignment the night before you will do incredibly poorly on this assignment. I cannot be any more direct with you. Please review the IA of my former student as a reminder of what can happen you don't take this assignment seriously. I really don't want to spend my Christmas break grading 65 IAs where a significant number of them are poorly written. I also saw several Plans of Investigation that were excellent. To those people, keep up the good work.

I gave everyone who turned in their assignment direct feedback. If you have any questions or concerns, email me. If you did not turn in this assignment feel free to email your Plan of Investigation so I can give you some direct feedback. I WANT TO HELP EVERYONE DO WELL ON THIS 200 POINT ASSIGNMENT.

Boys and girls, the clock is ticking for this assignment. You will have had two and a half months to complete a 1500-2000 word research paper. You will not get that long to conduct such a small assignment at the college level. Yes, this research paper is SMALL. Trust me.

I expect EXCELLENCE on this assignment.
That means you need to EDIT your papers and pay close attention to detail. I saw several sloppy grammatical mistakes made on your rough drafts. Make sure you know when to use effect vs. affect. Some of you are going to "asses" something in your IA. That should make for some really interesting reading.

Unfortunately for some of you, this assignment could make or break your grade for the entire semester. This holiday break is an excellent time to get some research/work done on your IA. Please take advantage of the time off.

Bring any and all questions about the IA when I return to school on Nov. 30. I will do my best to help all of you. Remember, you can also email me. Will we hit the ground running on my return. Come back to school ready to work until Christmas break.

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. Take care.

IA tips

Greetings IB History students. I hope things went well in class today. I miss teaching all of you, however, I love spending some quality time with the best baby in the world.

Anywho, I just wanted to give you all some tips for writing a good Plan of Investigation.

Tip #1:
Make sure the focus of your IA is as narrow as possible. This really applies to those of you with really giant/broad topics (e.g., slavery and the Civil War, etc.). Don't pick a ton of things to discuss in your Summary of Evidence.

Tip #2:
Whatever you tell me you are going to investigate in Part A must be addressed in your Summary of Evidence. I've seen several students mention things they were going to discuss in Part B and then never do so, which you guessed it, cause them to lose major points.

Tip #3:
Edit. If Part A has tons of grammatical errors then I'm going to worry about the rest of your IA. Remember, the Part A you turn in on Friday is a work in progress.

I will do my best to get them back to you before Thanksgiving break begins.

Feel free to email me with any questions you have.

Weekend Update

Thanks for the really kind comments everyone. We really appreciate it. Baby Nora is home safe and sound and we are ready to relax. Nora will make an appearance at school right before Christmas break. More information to follow in the very near future.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day in IB History. I will lecture on the reading and then spend the rest of the period discussing IA stuff. Please bring your sample IAs and any questions you may have. I will give out some information about O,P,V,L and some information on citing. You can always email with your questions while I am gone. I hope you all were able to get some work done on your IAs over your break.

See you all tomorrow!

Big news

My wife and I had our baby girl on Friday, November 13. She's super healthy and doing very well. That being said, I will be at school on Monday to wrap up some loose ends before I start my leave. IB students, Monday is going to be a very busy day. I will be discussing some very important information about the IA that day.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

I CANNOT meet with those students who made an appointment to meet with me tomorrow morning for essay preparation. The Social Studies Department has an important meeting during that time. I will do my best to fit you in at the end of class, during fourth period, or after school. I'm terribly about this, however, it's out of my control. See you all tomorrow for the start of our really LONG week of school.
