Final Weekend Update--Now with VIDEO

Have you started building your ark yet? I vote we hold classes in Arizona until the sun comes back. Is anyone still out there?

Just a few things:
1. Part C will be due next Friday, November 2. You should be able to get this entire section completed in the lab Tuesday-Wednesday.

2. Thankfully, the presidential campaign is almost over. That means we won't be subjected to truly terrible things like this (TURN YOUR VOLUME UP!):

Friday, October 26, 2012

IB Students

Here are your tasks for the weekend:

1. Do the homework readings. The first reading addresses several Supreme Court rulings from the early 1800s. Focus on the term judicial review, it will help you with essay number three.

2. Read over the instructions on Part C in your IA handbook. Start thinking about the Origins, Purposes, Values, and Limitations of the two sources you are going to evaluate. Examine Part C of the sample IA in your IA handbook.

3. MAKE OUTLINES FOR ESSAYS ONE AND TWO! First come, first serve this week for essay help.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and keep this channel open for future updates.

Long Weekend Update

I hope you all are enjoying your long weekend. I think it was about time for all us to have a break from each from the daily rigors of school. Anywho, IB students, the video below will help you with the reading that covers 261-69.

Finally, I really want to see this documentary when it comes to Portland. Very interesting and hard hitting material.

Final tips

Make sure your grammar and sentence structure look good. Have someone read your writing and check for grammatical errors.

History is written in the past tense

CITE! CITE! CITE! CITE! CITE!

Get some sleep. No mercy will be shown for those students who "pull an all-nighter" for what amounts to only 600-700 words of writing (Parts A-B together). Let's get real here, you are not typing up a 25 page research paper from over a dozen sources.

You are running out of time to help your participation grade for the first quarter. Come to class alert and ready to discuss tonight's reading.

Thanks and good luck.

IA Update

Here are some reminders regarding your IA:

1. Parts A and B are due on Wednesday, October 24 at the beginning of class. I will take ten points off your grade each calendar day if Parts A and B are late. No exceptions.

2. Make sure you have cited from ALL of your sources. Failure to do so will result in a loss of points on Part B.

3. When in doubt, CITE!!

4. Follow the format of the sample IA I gave you last when turning Parts A and B. Make sure you include the word count for each section at the conclusion of each section. Citations, headings, and footnotes don't count as part of your word count.

If you want to use Turabian footnotes instead of MLA citations go here

Citation maker site

REMEMBER, BRING YOUR FLASH DRIVE AND YOUR RESEARCH TO CLASS FRIDAY AND MONDAY!!!

Summary of Evidence

How to write Part B of the paper:
1.   1. Only focus on your research paper notes that directly address your research question and your three points you will be making in Part D.
2.     Use bullet-point format.
3.     You will need 1.5 to 2 pages of typed bullet-point notes.
4.     EVERYTHING IN THIS SECTION IS CITED!  Every bullet-point should have at least 1 citation, because all of this information is coming from your sources.
5.     THIS INFORMATION, HOWEVER, NEEDS TO BE PARAPHRASED!  It cannot be written word-for-word or mostly word-for-word.  If it is, turnitin.com will indicate to me that it has been plagiarized, and you will receive NO CREDIT for it.
6.     Put a citation for each bullet-point of information at the bottom of the typed page.  You need to do this because you got the information from another source, even though you put it in your own words.  WHEN IN DOUBT, CITE!
7.     Use the correct bibliographic format for your citations as shown in the sample paper.  You must also include the page numbers if the source had them.  Refer closely to your sample paper and ask me questions as necessary.
